New national standard for organic production in the Russian Federation

On April 19, 2021, the conclusions of the round table meeting on organic products and quality products were published on the website of the Federal Accreditation Service.

Discussion on organic products in the form of a video conference

The meeting was organized by the Agriculture Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma and was held in the form of a videoconference. The most important issues raised during the meeting are:

  • certification of ecological products and ecological high quality agricultural products
  • marking of all the above-mentioned products
  • legal regulations concerning the production, processing and marketing of this type of products.

Eco food certification on a voluntary basis

During the meeting, it was reminded that the confirmation of the compliance of organic products takes place on the basis of voluntary certification. The certification procedure is carried out by accredited conformity assessment bodies registered in the national system for organic production. Such standards are provided for in the Federal Law No. 280 in force "On Organic Products and Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation".

Ecological products - the standard GOST 33980

According to the represenative of the Federal Accreditation Service, at the moment the register of accredited entities contains data on 7 bodies that carry out the organic food certification process according to the rules specified in the GOST 33980 standard "Organic products. Principles of production, processing, labeling and sale ”.

Ecological products from wild raw materials

It should be noted that from June 1, 2021, the national standard GOST R 59425-2021 "Ecological products from wild raw materials. Principles of collection, acquisition, processing, storage, transport and labeling” is in force. This document introduces the concepts of "ecological wild raw materials" and "ecological products from wild raw materials", as well as precisely lays down the requirements for collection areas of wild raw materials, it defines the principles of collecting, transporting, processing and labeling organic products obtained from such raw materials.

The use of this standard for the voluntary certification of organic products will allow producers to include them in the appropriate state register, as well as to label their products with the organic product mark. This is an additional marketing incentive for customers who are increasingly paying attention to the source of the food they buy.
