List of plastic products that may soon be excluded from the Russian market
The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Natural Resources and other departments will prepare a list of products to be phased out gradually as they cannot be recycled, which contributes to increasing environmental pollution.
Fight against non-recyclable packaging
According to the announcements, the list is to include non-recyclable or non-recyclable packaging, disposable tableware, plastic containers for food storage and other similar plastic products.
The list of products, as well as the full procedure of actions necessary to limit the trade in these products, is to be published by the end of the second quarter of this year.
Products made of polystyrene and PVC in the production of food packaging
Experts from this industry consider it necessary to include in the list products made of expanded polystyrene (i.e. the popular polystyrene), as well as heat-shrinkable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) labels, most often used for packaging beverages, dairy products and other such products.
A system of fighting plastic like in Belarus?
The Russian authorities emphasize that they want to create a system in which some of the used plastic will be recycled. The plans concern the use of up to 50% of secondary raw materials from waste in construction, agriculture and industry.
On January 1, 2021, a law prohibiting the use and sale of disposable plastic tableware in catering establishments entered into force in Belarus. In October 2019, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade considered a gradual reduction in the production of disposable plastic bags, but the idea was abandoned due to the fact that it generated high costs for companies in various industries.
