EAEU: 12 months of transition period before introducing changes to the regulations on food production
The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission established a transitional period for producers to adapt to the new requirements of the Eurasian Union technical regulations in the field of food safety.
Food production regulations
Manufacturers' obligations and safety procedures related to the production of food products are set out in the technical regulations. Apart from the products themselves, these regulations are subject to the process of their production, storage, transport and sale. These provisions do not apply to food products produced by individual citizens in their homes.
12 months to adapt to the new rules
The Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission establishes a 12-month transitional period for adapting to the new provisions of the technical regulations on ensuring safety in food production. The changes were introduced by the decision of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission on August 8, 2019. By the end of 12 months, production and marketing of food products are allowed in the customs territory of the EEU in accordance with the mandatory requirements set out in the technical regulations of the Customs Union "On food safety" adopted on December 9, 2011.
Is it possible to sell manufactured products after a transition period
We want to calm down all producers who were afraid that the goods manufactured in the last weeks of the transition period could be withdrawn. By the decision of the ECE Council, trading the above mentioned products is allowed within the validity period set by its manufacturer. Thus, even after the end of the transitional period, goods produced during its duration may remain on the market, as long as they are not expired.
This decision enters into force 30 calendar days from the date of its official publication, i.e. 28 June 2020.
