Common market for organic agricultural products in the EAEU

The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission approved a draft "map" of the common market for organic agricultural products under the EAEU, said Iya Malkina, assistant to the chairman of the Council at an online conference on Wednesday. On October 23, 2020, an official announcement on this matter was published on the EAEU website.

The "map" of the common market for organic products

The planned 'map' is intended to include three main items, as listed below:

  • preparation of an international agreement aimed at ensuring the free movement of organic agricultural products within the EAEU;
  • preparation of draft declarations on cooperation between the EAEU and the Scientific Research Institute of Organic Agriculture and the International Federation of the Movement for Organic Farming;
  • examining the issue of access to third country markets for organic products produced in the EAEU countries.

Free movement of agricultural organic products

"The roadmap provides for the development of a draft international agreement aimed at the free movement of organic agricultural products in the EAEU countries. To this end, it is planned to establish uniform requirements for the procedure of production, marking, certification and import of such products into the customs territory, as well as to ensure mutual recognition of documents on conformity assessment. " - said Malkina.

By the second half of 2021, proposals should be prepared to harmonize the legal requirements of the EAEU countries to ensure mutual recognition of the necessary documents for the conformity assessment of organic products and their production.

Uniform register of accreditation bodies

Important information - before the deadline of the second half of 2021, it is necessary to submit to the EAEU a proposal to create a uniform register of accredited bodies confirming the compliance of the production of organic goods and the products themselves.

The published information shows that the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission plans to establish a dialogue with international organizations and further work on the issue of the possibility of exporting organic products to the markets of third countries, which would be an additional development opportunity for farmers from EAEU countries.
