Series of standards for testing RFID systems

On October 11, 2021, a series of national standards entitled "Methods of operational testing of radio frequency identification devices was adopted". They were commissioned for preparation and approved by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).

3 new GOST R standards

The scope of the standards relates to methods of testing RF identification devices. These standards are:

  • GOST R 59389.1-2021 (ISO / IEC 18046-1: 2011) "Information technologies. Methods of testing the performance of devices with RFID systems. Part 1. Methods of operational testing of radio frequency identification systems "

  • GOST R 59389.2-2021 (ISO / IEC 18046-2: 2020) "Information technologies. Methods of testing the performance of devices with RFID systems. Part 2. Reader / interrogator operation testing methods "

  • GOST R 59389.4-2021 (ISO / IEC 18046-4: 2015) "Information technology. Methods of testing the performance of devices with RFID systems. Part 4. Methods of operational research of radio frequency identification gates used in libraries. "

What are RFID systems?

RFID is an abbreviation of Radio-Frequency Identification, which means identification using radio waves. It is an automatic identification and data acquisition technology that uses radio wave communication or inductive interaction with an RF tag to read key identifiers using various types of signal modulation and data encoding.

Radio frequency identification has become widespread in the commercial, manufacturing, transport and warehouse industries. It is also used in library systems, where fast, non-contact identification of a large number of accounting items equipped with radio tags is required. Radio frequency identification is also used to combat illegal trade in industrial products.

The scope of the new standards

The discussed standards GOST R 59389.1-2021 and GOST R 59389.2-2021 establish universal test methods for assessing the performance of a wide range of RFID systems and RFID readers / probes. They do not concern one specific industry, but the possibilities of using RFID systems in various areas. In contrast, GOST R 59389.4-2021 is a specific application as it establishes operational testing methods for high-frequency identification gates for controlling accounting items.

Standard developers

The series of standards discussed in the article was developed by the Technical Committee for Standardization No. 355 "Technologies for Automatic Identification and Data Collection" based on parts 1, 2 and 4 of the international ISO / IEC 18046 standard. They will enter into force on June 1, 2022.
