Mandatory labeling of automotive oils in Russia may be introduced from 2022

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation is considering the possibility of extending the digital goods labeling program in 2022 also to automotive oils.

Digital product labeling in Russia

The system of digital product labeling in Russia was created to guarantee the authenticity and high quality of the goods placed on the market. The first products received digital codes as early as 2016, and in the coming years it is planned to significantly expand the database with new product categories. The marking includes the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), serial number and cryptographic keys encoded in the GS1 DataMatrix system. The unique digital code placed on the products during labeling makes it possible to check whether the consumer is dealing with legally produced high-quality goods. The digital marking system also allows you to check the entire route of the goods - from the manufacturer or importer to the end customer.

The problem of counterfeit automotive oils

Motor oil producers are another group of entrepreneurs who point out that their industry is overrun with counterfeit products. This phenomenon prompted them to submit an official application to government agencies asking for digital product labeling. Thanks to this solution, consumers could be sure that they are buying real, wholesome and fairly produced goods. Thus, producers could legally earn money on legally manufactured products. In the current reality, manufacturers are not financially able to compete with fraudsters who place counterfeit motor oils on the market.

More groups of goods lined up for digital labelling?

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has already announced that in the near future more groups of goods will be included in the mandatory digital product labeling system. It is planned to introduce mandatory digital marking of baby carriages and car seats, as well as extend the marking to other light industry products.
