New proposal to amend the technical regulations for tobacco products
Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports that the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection, operating in Russia, has sent a proposal to the government to introduce a law that will make it mandatory to indicate the full composition of tobacco products on cigarette packets.
Complete information for consumers
The representatives of the Union emphasize that introducing the obligation to provide the full composition of tobacco products should be obligatory, because currently cigarette manufacturers do not provide consumers with full information about the concentration of hazardous substances present in them. At the same time, in accordance with the requirements of the technical regulations TR CU 035/2014 on tobacco products, companies are required to include information on the packaging of harmful systemic compounds, carcinogenic and mutagenic substances.
Acceptable limits and monitoring of harmful substances
Almost all experts agree that it is necessary to organize state monitoring of the content of poisons in tobacco products, as well as to establish and introduce into the technical regulations permissible limits for the content of hazardous substances in cigarettes and the procedure for providing this information to consumers. Limiting the concentration of such substances in products intended for sale is one of the necessary steps in the fight for human health and life.
Why make these kinds of changes?
The proposal to introduce the changes described above results mainly from concern for public health. Many consumers are unaware of the amount of hazardous substances in their tobacco products. Providing exact amounts and the consequences of their harmful effects on packaging may have a positive effect on reducing the use of tobacco among the public.
